Kate Chisholm

Kate Chisholmis a director, writer, designer, and performer. She has directed original works at The Culture Project, La MaMa, Joe’s Pub, Prospect Theater Company, Baltimore Theatre Project, Columbia University, and Towson University. At Prospect Theater Company, she directed The Hidden Sky, a musical she wrote with composer & lyricist Peter Foley, based on a short story by acclaimed author Ursula K. Le Guin. At the Culture Project, she directed Newton’s Universe, a play for actor and puppets about Isaac Newton’s exploration of alchemy, which she also wrote and designed. At Baltimore Theatre Project, Kate directed the world premiere of Heartfield, Kenneth Allan Vega's musical about the life and work of the German photomontage artist, John Heartfield, and his fight against fascism through art. For the Towson University MFA in Theatre Program she directed the poet Kenneth Koch's On Aesthetics with an emphasis on ensemble movement. Kate has extensive interdisciplinary theater training and has performed in over 30 plays and musicals.
As a writer, Kate won a Richard Rodgers Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters and received a Barrymore nomination for Outstanding New Play, for The Hidden Sky. The Hidden Sky premiered at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, where it was nominated for six Barrymore Awards; it was subsequently produced at Spirit of Broadway Theater in Connecticut, Prospect Theater Company in NYC, and in concert at Ars Nova and Joe's Pub.
Kate holds a BA in English from Yale University, and an MFA in Theater from Towson University's interdisciplinary graduate theater program. She is a member of the Lincoln Center Theater Director’s Lab, a New Georges Affiliated Artist, and an alum of the St. Ann’s Warehouse Puppet Lab. Kate has guest taught theater at Pratt Institute. She has received grants from Theater Instituut Nederlands, the US/ Netherlands Touring & Exchange Project, and St. Ann's Warehouse (Brooklyn, NY).
